Arrival day! Your group will depart and travel to our nation’s capital—Washington D.C.—the heart of American democracy and home to incredible collections of art, history, and science. On this trip you’ll see monuments and museums that tell the story of how the country began, grew, and changed, and take a closer look at the institutes that shape American politics and culture. Afternoon:
Begin your DC adventure with lunch at the café inside the National Museum of American History—then explore the museum that’s dedicated to collecting, preserving, and displaying artifacts such as the original Star-Spangled Banner flag and Abraham Lincoln’s top hat. Next, you’ll head out to the National Mall and visit the surrounding memorials. Start at the Washington Monument and ascend the iconic structure for breathtaking panoramic views of the city and a chance to take some memorable pictures. Then, stop at the World War II Memorial to honor the sacrifices made during this significant historical conflict. Follow the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to remember the fallen and consider the war’s lasting impact. Then, visit the awe-inspiring Lincoln Memorial. Dedicated to the “Great Emancipator”, take a moment to admire this massive sculpture and ponder his timeless words inscribed on the monument. See the poignant Korean War Veterans Memorial next and reflect on the bravery of those who fought in this globalized conflict. Finally, visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to honor the legacy of this civil rights leader and his powerful message of equality.
Evening:
Your welcome dinner is served! Celebrate your first night in the city with a lively and atmospheric dinner at the Hardrock Café. An homage to music history, this rock & roll themed restaurant has lots to see. Choose from a menu of American classics and dine surrounded by memorabilia from music legends. After a fun and filling meal, head back to your hotel for a full night’s sleep.
Day 2: Arlington National Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, US Marine Corps War Memorial, National Archives Museum, White House, The People’s House: A White House Experience, Georgetown Ghost Tour
Morning:
Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel before crossing the Potomac River to the largest military cemetery in the nation—the Arlington National Cemetery. Admission to these hallowed grounds includes the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as access to the hop-on-hop-off trolley. See the final resting place of President John F. Kennedy and The Eternal Flame, as well as the Challenger Memorial and The Arlington House, the historic former home of general Robert E. Lee. Before departure, stop at the US Marine Corps War Memorial (also known as the Iwo Jima Monument). See the optical illusion that makes it look as though the flag is being raised and admire this moving testament to the marines.
Afternoon:
After recharging with a delicious lunch, you’ll visit the National Archives Museum. See the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights—the Charters of Freedom. Standing before these foundational documents is a meaningful moment for history students looking to gain a deeper connection to the creation of our democracy. Following this, walk over to the White House. Here you’ll have a photo opportunity to capture the iconic residence and office of the President, a universally recognized symbol of American political power. A short distance away, enter The People’s House: A White House Experience. This cutting-edge educational museum has interactive exhibits and a replica of the Oval Office.
Evening:
Dinner tonight will be at the popular Cheesecake Factory. Pick from a huge menu of dinner options and save room for a decadent dessert. After eating, stroll the streets of Washington D.C.’s oldest neighborhood on a Georgetown Ghost Tour! Hear haunting and dramatic tales as your guide weaves together verifiable history with captivating legends of restless spirits and true crime mysteries. After visiting the sites of whispered lore, head back to your hotel to rest and recharge for the night.
Day 3: United States Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Museum of African American History and Culture, Dinner Cruise
Morning:
Eat your fill with breakfast at the hotel. Then start your last full day in Washington D.C. at the United States Capitol. An architectural marvel infused with rich artistic touches, students will take a tour that includes the Rotunda and its great dome. Beyond its aesthetic, you’ll see a legislative hub where the nation’s laws are debated and passed. Then, dive into the heart of justice with a visit the Supreme Court. Admire the grandeur of this iconic structure and gain insights into the judicial branch’s role in American democracy. Learn about landmark cases, the nomination process, and the inner workings of the highest court in the land.
Afternoon:
Enjoy lunch with a view a short distance away at the Library of Congress. The large café inside the Madison building has something for everyone. Once refueled, learn about the library’s role in supporting Congress and preserving American history. Nicknamed ‘America’s memory’ it gives students a powerful visual in the value of the preservation of knowledge. With ornate reading rooms, historical artifacts related to law and legislation, and million‑book galleries, you’ll be stepping through one of the largest libraries in the world. End the afternoon at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This deeply moving and powerful museum invites students to explore exhibits on the legal struggles and triumphs of African Americans, reflecting on the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.
Evening:
To commemorate your last night in the capital, embark on a scenic Potomac River dinner cruise! Glide past iconic landmarks as you enjoy stunning views and a delicious meal. It’s an elegant and memorable way for your students to celebrate a successful trip to DC, and the perfect blend of sightseeing and adventure. Once back on land, head to your hotel for a full night’s rest ahead of departure day.
Day 4: Departure Day, International Spy Museum or U.S. National Arboretum
Morning:
Enjoy one final breakfast at your hotel before checking out. If time allows, visit the International Spy Museum or The U.S. National Arboretum. One is dedicated to the history and tradecraft of international espionage, while the other offers 446-acres of botanical gardens complete with research center run by the Department of Agriculture. You can also use any extra time to shop around for souvenirs or take a few last photos. When you’re ready, begin your safe journey home.
